This guide documents the basing process used for our Necron models. The goal is to create a dry desert-style base with good texture and contrast against the metallic models.
Materials Used#
- GW Technical texture paint (Astro Granit)
- Black primer (spray)
- Monster Brown
- Desert Yellow
- Skeleton Bone
- Abaddon Black (base rim)
Step-by-Step Process#
1. Apply Texture#
- Apply GW Technical texture paint to the base.
- Smear it on liberally to create natural ground texture.
- Use an old brush or sculpting tool to spread it.
2. Let It Dry#
- Allow the texture paint to dry completely before priming.
- This prevents cracking or paint separation.
3. Prime#
- Spray the entire model and base with black primer.
- This creates strong shadows in the texture.
4. Base Color#
- Paint the base with Monster Brown.
5. First Dry Brush#
- Lightly dry brush Desert Yellow over the raised texture.
6. Final Highlight#
- Apply a lighter dry brush of Skeleton Bone to the highest points.
7. Base Rim#
- Paint the base rim with Abaddon Black for a clean finish.
Tips#
- Apply texture before priming so the primer seals everything together.
- Use progressively lighter dry brushing to bring out the ground texture.
- Keep the rim clean — it frames the model and improves presentation.
